Attracting Settlers to the Maryland Frontier…

Charles Calvert, the 5th Lord Baltimore, was a British nobleman and Proprietary Governor of the Province of Maryland.  Settlement in western Maryland was slow, so in 1732 he developed a plan to “increase the number of honest people within our province of Maryland”.  Calvert offered 200 acres of land to settlers free of charge, provided they establish a farm with an orchard of 100 trees.  After 3 years, taxes were to be paid on the land.  This attractive offer encouraged settlement in the Maryland frontier.
